The science

Your heart may be older than your birth certificate says.

Heart age is the age of a healthy person whose cardiovascular risk profile matches yours. If you're 45 but your blood pressure, cholesterol, and other risk factors look like those of a typical 58-year-old, your heart age is 58. It's a more intuitive way to understand risk than a raw percentage.

This calculator uses a simplified version of the Framingham Risk Score — the most widely validated cardiovascular risk model in medicine, developed from the landmark Framingham Heart Study that has tracked over 15,000 people since 1948. It estimates your 10-year probability of a major cardiac event from blood pressure, cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, and sex.

#1 cause of death

Cardiovascular disease kills more people globally each year than any other condition — yet most of its key risk factors are fully modifiable.

The good news: heart age is highly responsive to intervention. Quitting smoking can reduce heart age by 5–8 years within 12 months. Lowering systolic blood pressure by 10 mmHg (e.g. through exercise, diet, or medication) reduces 10-year risk by roughly 25%. Raising HDL through aerobic exercise has similarly strong effects.

A heart age more than 5 years above your actual age is worth discussing with your doctor — especially if you have multiple elevated risk factors. Most can be addressed with specific, proven interventions.

Modifiable risk factors & impact

Quit smoking−5 to 8 yrs
Lower SBP by 10 mmHg−25% risk
Raise HDL via aerobic exerciseSignificant
Control blood sugar (diabetes)−4 pts risk
Current smoking (untreated)+3 to 4 pts

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

What is heart age?

Heart age is the age of a healthy person whose cardiovascular risk matches yours. If you are 45 but your blood pressure, cholesterol, and other risk factors resemble those of an average 55-year-old, your heart age is 55. A heart age higher than your actual age signals elevated cardiovascular risk.

What is the Framingham Risk Score?

The Framingham Risk Score is the most widely validated cardiovascular risk model in medicine. Developed from the landmark Framingham Heart Study, it estimates a person's 10-year probability of experiencing a major cardiovascular event. Key inputs are age, sex, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, smoking status, and diabetes.

How can I lower my heart age?

The most impactful changes are stopping smoking, managing blood pressure below 130/80 mmHg, raising HDL cholesterol through regular aerobic exercise, and controlling blood sugar if diabetic. Most people who make these changes see their heart age improve within 6 to 12 months.

What is a normal heart age?

Ideally your heart age should match or be below your actual age. A heart age more than 5 years above your actual age is a sign of elevated risk worth discussing with a doctor.

Does heart age affect life expectancy?

Yes. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death globally. An elevated heart age reflects a higher probability of heart attack or stroke, both of which significantly reduce life expectancy. Reducing heart age through lifestyle changes is one of the highest-impact steps you can take for longevity.

What is a heart health calculator?

A heart health calculator estimates the overall cardiovascular health of your heart based on key risk factors like blood pressure, cholesterol, smoking status, and diabetes. This heart health calculator uses the Framingham Risk Score to give you a heart age and a 10-year probability of a major cardiac event.
